Hacker News user “james_carson” submitted a screenshot of the article claiming that the FBI had reached out to the White Houses office of the deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, requesting the Whitehouse to take down the article.
The White House had already done so, according to the article, and the request was met with a polite response from Rosenstein’s office, which said that it was “unaware of the FBI’s request”.
It was, however, the FBI that sought the removal of the report, and it seems to have been the FBI who pushed the WhiteHouse to take the action, with one source writing that Rosenstein’s request had “made it clear that the White house wanted to see the article removed”.
In the article titled The ‘Fireside Chat’ with Comey and the FBI, the anonymous author of the screenshot goes on to say that the request for the article to be removed was made by Rosenstein’s deputy, Andrew McCabe.
McCabe has since been confirmed as the deputy FBI director, with Mueller taking over the position.
The article also makes reference to a memo from McCabe that said he had not been aware of the investigation being opened into former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn.
It is not clear whether the McCabe memo refers to the current investigation, or is the actual report.
A spokesman for the FBI declined to comment.
