How to get pregnant with a sperm bank

A $1,500 sperm bank that has been developed by the University of Queensland will allow patients to take control of their own reproduction and have their own babies.

Dr Andrew Fuchs and his colleagues at the University’s Centre for Reproductive Technology have developed the device to be able to produce a sperm that can survive for up to 12 weeks after fertilisation.

“If we have a couple of hundred sperm we could produce 100 eggs per cycle,” Dr Fuchs said.

“We can use that to create embryos that will be healthy and ready to go into the womb, which is very important for many women who have had problems with infertility.”

But we want to be really, really careful because we’re only able to have about two to three embryos in a week.

“Dr Fuchs’s team was looking at how to create a sperm to be safe to be fertilised, but were unsure if they could get the same level of quality.”

It’s a little bit like creating an egg from scratch, but we can’t do that because the cells we are trying to make are too small to be effective,” he said.

Dr Fuch’s team created the device using genetic engineering, and then using a synthetic DNA to build a human sperm.

The team had to work with a large number of embryos to get the results they wanted, but Dr Fuch said the team could have produced 100 to 200 embryos a week with this method.

The device is able to be used with either male or female gametes, and it can be implanted into the female uterus.

It can be inserted into the cervix, or in the vagina, and the doctor will know if a fertilised egg is viable.”

The next step is to implant the fertilised embryo in the womb of the patient and it will then start the cycle,” he explained.”

So the process can be repeated as often as you like until the egg implants in the uterus, which can be anywhere from 12 to 18 weeks.

“Dr Peter Cavanagh from the University, who was not involved in the study, said the idea was promising.”

In the future it may become a more routine method of having a baby,” he told ABC Radio Brisbane.”

There’s no way you would be able with this device to make babies but it would certainly make a difference.”‘

A very useful technology’Dr Fucus said the system would give women who had difficulty conceiving a lot more control over their fertility.”

I’m very glad that we’ve had a technology to help us to get through the process of conceiving,” he remarked.”

And that means we will be able and confident in our decisions, so we can choose the best method to use for our baby.
